Eva Müllerová, MD: "I think of aesthetic dermatology as a tool to help us like ourselves."

MUDr. Eva Müllerová is the new face of dermatology at MEDICOM Clinic in Brno. Clients cannot but praise her for her friendly approach, professionalism and knowledge of the latest methods and techniques that she brings back from international and domestic congresses of aesthetic medicine. We talked to the doctor not only about her relationship with dermatology, but also about what she likes to do outside her office.
Has it always been your dream to become a corrective dermatologist?
I am lucky enough to say that my job is truly a dream come true. I enjoy coming to it and when I leave, I look forward to what the next day holds. I've been saying I was going to be a doctor since I was a kid. I went to college with the idea of one day working my way up to dermatology and combining it with the already burgeoning aesthetics field. The vision of a clear goal made my path through the whole educational process very easy.
What do you enjoy and find impressive about aesthetic dermatology? What should be its role?
I enjoy the variety of procedures, the whole creative process, the joy of the clients after the procedure. I like that the results of the work are usually immediately visible. I think of aesthetic dermatology as such a tool to help us like ourselves, to feel good about ourselves. Sometimes clients are bothered by even a small deficiency. When we remove it, they are more satisfied with themselves, more confident and they spread that good mood further.
What professional experience do you most value?
The field of aesthetic medicine is constantly and very quickly moving forward. You need to stay "up to date". There is always something to learn. I draw inspiration mainly from abroad. My favourite educational event is the World Congress of Antiaging Medicine held annually in Paris. It presents the latest trends in the field. It is literally packed with dozens of lectures and workshops. I always take away some improved application technique, tips on new injectable materials, or a new piece of equipment for facial or body rejuvenation. However, I also have some inspiring lecturers in my home country whom I respect and enjoy meeting.
Why did you decide to join the MEDICOM family?
In connection with MEDICOM Clinic, I have long observed the stability and satisfaction of the medical team, quality leadership, capable management and their working together in mutual respect. I feel comfortable at the clinic, there is a good atmosphere here. All this is underlined by top quality materials and the latest equipment. I am very grateful to be part of such a concept. I also appreciate the fact that the clinic only works with really experienced doctors with many years of experience and the relevant professional specialization. Aesthetic dermatology is being performed by an increasing number of recent medical graduates and doctors from other disciplines who call themselves aesthetic medicine specialists and do not state their specific specialty. I am not a fan of this.

Are trends in dermatology changing in a similar way to plastic surgery?
The field naturally evolves and changes. Every year, new materials, new devices, new techniques for different treatments are added. In the past, anti-aging treatments were particularly prevalent, designed to reduce the signs of aging, such as replenishing lost volume and addressing wrinkles. However, the age limit of clients is getting lower and the demand for purely beautifying treatments is increasing, where so-called beautification is involved. Young ladies are also coming in with requests for lip and chin modelling, facial contouring or reducing circles under the eyes. In the care of skin quality with the help of aesthetic dermatology we are already slowly approaching Western countries, where these treatments are a common and regular norm.
If you had to choose your favourite procedures to perform, what would they be?
I like to combine different treatments. If we want to achieve the best results, then there is no other way. For example, lip augmentation for acne-prone skin tends to accentuate the acne problem even more, drawing more attention to the face. Similarly, for more mature women, reducing wrinkles with botulinum toxin, for example, won't have such a visible effect when the skin is generally tired, dehydrated, or not unified by the amount of pigmentation. I take a holistic approach to the face. During consultations, I explain to clients what treatment plan would be most beneficial for them and then we work on it gradually. It's hard to pick specific procedures that I enjoy doing the most, I enjoy them all.
On the other hand, what are you not a fan of?
I don't like some of the current unnatural trends, such as masculinization or focusing the angle of the lower jaw in women, over-emphasizing the cheekbones, or raising the outer edge of the eyebrows too much in so-called foxy eyes. Such interventions are, in my opinion, unflattering to the face. Due to the influence of social media, where the resulting transformations are often unfortunately graphically enhanced, clients can sometimes have unrealistic ideas and demands.
What do you think "beauty" means?
The criteria of physical beauty change over time and the perception of it is also very subjective. From the outer shell, I evaluate more of a well-groomed appearance, which I also take as a form of interpersonal communication, what a person communicates about themselves to the outside world at first glance. I also notice inner beauty, what a person exudes, what energy they have. However, when observing people in everyday life, I cannot help but think, within a certain professional deformation, what would be worth improving in a given person. I keep my assessment to myself, of course, but if a family member or friend asks for my opinion, I'm happy to give advice.
Would you put yourself in the hands of another dermatologist?
So far, I do everything I undergo myself. It's not that I don't trust anyone else, but I can practically do most of the procedures with my own hands and I don't mind or have a problem with it. It's mostly botulinum toxin injections to prevent mimic wrinkles, lip hydration, regular moisturizing and biostimulating injectable mesotherapy, and minor laser procedures. Next, I usually try all the new things on myself so I can tell my clients from experience what they can expect, how it heals and how long it lasts. However, I'm currently about to try the worldwide hit, microneedle radiofrequency, so I'm hoping some of my colleagues will take me up on it.
How do you "recharge" your batteries after a day's work?
I enjoy time with my family and friends. I like to go for a walk in nature, get a massage, work in the garden, read a book. On longer days off, we go somewhere warm or skiing.
