Gynecomastia or when breast size bothers men

Men suffering from gynecomastia are faced with unwanted breast enlargement. This is caused by the growth of the mammary gland and can affect men at different stages of their lives, most commonly in childhood and puberty or in old age. The factors of occurrence vary, with hormonal imbalance playing a significant role.

The most common causes of enlarged breasts in men

Hormonal imbalance

nutritional influences - for example, foods containing phytoestrogens

physical inactivity and obesity

use of anabolics, drugs or certain medications

chronic stress

serious diseases - tumours of the testicles, adrenal glands or pituitary gland

Psychologically, gynaecomastia can be a serious problem for men of any age. "For example, wearing swimsuits, tight clothing, playing sports or sharing an intimate life brings discomfort and stress to many men with gynecomastia. Particularly in adolescence, it can cause a significant reduction in self-esteem and social isolation. It is important to understand this problem and look for solutions," says Pavel Horyna, MD, Chief Medical Officer of the Prague branch of MEDICOM Clinic

What types of gynecomastia exist

True gynecomastia in men is characterised by enlargement of the mammary gland. It can affect one or both breasts and the size of the enlargement can be. There is also a distinction between active gynecomastia, which is associated with swelling and pain in the gland, and chronic gynecomastia, which is no longer painful and is characterized by hard breast tissue and irreversible changes. These can only be removed surgically.

Treatment by aesthetic surgery

Breast reduction in men is performed by a plastic surgeon in collaboration with an endocrinologist who makes the diagnosis. There are several surgical techniques that are individually adapted to the needs of the client. An effective solution is laser or ultrasonic breast liposuction. It can also be combined with removal of excess skin and reshaping of the areolae. The procedure takes approximately 1 to 2 hours, with the client usually spending one day in the clinic. After the operation, it is necessary to wear compression underwear for about one month and avoid straining the pectoral muscles. A return to lighter office work is possible after one week, and to sporting activities after 6 to 8 weeks.
