Liposuction under general anaesthesia

Before the procedure

Come for a consultation

The first important step is an initial consultation with a plastic surgeon or a specialist liposuction consultant. You'll tell one of them what your vision is for the outcome of the procedure, and together you'll find the best way to achieve it. Above all, you will choose the appropriate invasive liposuction technique - we offer conventional tumescent liposuction, ultrasonic liposuction, laser liposuction or water liposuction.

You will learn all the necessary information about the procedure, post-operative healing and possible risks. The consultant or doctor will answer all your questions. You will also see photos of our clients before and after liposuction. If you decide to undergo the procedure, you can make an appointment right away to schedule your surgery and comprehensive pre-operative evaluation.

We remove fat from multiple areas under general anesthesia

General anesthesia allows us to suction fat from multiple areas of the body in a single procedure. However, if you are only concerned about one problem area, your consultant will recommend that you undergo the procedure under local anaesthetic only. This will be less demanding on your body.

It is also possible to use suctioned fat for breast augmentation under general anaesthetic. Breast augmentation with your own fat is an increasingly popular method. This is mainly due to the fact that you do not have to worry about how your body will react to the implant. You simply get rid of fat where you don't want it and gain weight in the breast area.

Before the operation, we will check that you are completely healthy

Your body needs to be in good shape, that is, completely healthy, before the procedure for everything to go well. Therefore, we will check that you should not have any complications during the procedure with a comprehensive pre-operative examination. We will perform a biochemical blood test, an ECG and a chemical and sedimentation test of the urine.

If you are suffering from a serious illness of any kind, please alert your surgeon and anaesthetist well in advance. In addition to a comprehensive pre-operative examination, in such a case you will need to provide a statement of illness from the doctor you normally see. You should then bring all the information to the clinic reception in person or send it to us by post, email or fax.

Taking a blood thinner is unfortunately a contraindication to the procedure. This medication should not be taken as early as one week before the scheduled procedure. Thus, it is up to your hematologist to authorize discontinuation of this medication for at least 14 days (one week before and one week after the procedure) without putting you at risk.

All results will be evaluated by the plastic surgeon who will perform the liposuction at least a few days before the procedure. This is so that some of the tests can be repeated or supplemented if necessary. However, the results must be as up-to-date as possible. They must not be older than 14 days on the day of the procedure.

One week before the procedure, be aware of any medications

If you are taking medications containing coumarins, consult the prescribing doctor at least one week before the procedure about discontinuing them or replacing them with heparin.
If you are taking acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin, Anopyrin, Godasal, Thomapyrin), ibuprofen (Ibalgin, Brufen), naproxen (Nalgesin), vitamin E for a long time, take them off at least one week before the procedure.
Do not take any other medicines that contain these active substances. These drugs affect blood clotting and can lead to increased bleeding during and after surgery. If necessary, you can replace them with other analgesics after consulting your doctor.

If you are taking drugs from the tricyclic antidepressant group (Nortrilen, Melipramine, Anafranil, etc.), inform your surgeon and anaesthetist.

Part of the preparation will be up to you

Avoid alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine, heavy and bloated foods 2 days before the procedure. Also look out for foods high in fibre - especially fruit and vegetables, cabbage, pulses, muesli etc. Drink at least 2 litres of water.

Do not eat, drink or smoke from midnight before the procedure.
Do not rub anything on your face or body, it should not be oily before surgery. Do not apply skin or body creams or ointments, perfume or make-up.
Bring all your medications that you take regularly to the clinic.
Also bring a change of underwear and toiletries. Everything else you will need - towel, washcloth, shirt, gown, slippers, bedding - will be provided for you at the clinic.

During the procedure

The procedure varies slightly from method to method

For all invasive liposuction procedures, we use a tumescent solution containing diluted anaesthetic and adrenaline. During liposuction, the doctor sucks the fat from the designated areas through a thin cannula that is connected to a device that creates a vacuum.

In the case of ultrasonic liposuction and both laser liposuction, a special microcannula/probe with a penetrating ultrasonic or laser fiber is used to soften the fat before the actual suctioning. The suction is then more gentle on the body. The laser and ultrasound have a thermal effect that provokes regeneration of the subcutaneous tissues. This will also partially promote skin tightening.

Moreover, these heat sources target exclusively the fat cells, so the surrounding tissues and blood vessels are not damaged during liposuction. As a result, clients have much less swelling and bruising on their body after the procedure and their overall post-operative healing time is significantly reduced. The duration of the surgery depends on the extent of the areas to be liposuctioned. As a guide, the procedure takes around 1.5-2 hours.

Do not remove compression garments for the first 24 hours

A plastic surgeon, OR nurse, anesthesiologist and anesthesiology nurse will be with you during the surgery while you are under general anesthesia. They will monitor your vital signs throughout the time to make sure everything goes well. After the procedure, you will be dressed in compression underwear that you must not remove for the first 24 hours. You'll wake up in the clinic room.

Staying at the clinic

You sleep over at the clinic

You will stay at the clinic with us until the next day. We definitely don't recommend you drive then. If you live in the same city as our clinic, we will be happy to give you a free ride home after the procedure. Otherwise, ask your partner or someone close to you to come pick you up.

After returning home

Observe resting regime for the first 2 weeks

After invasive liposuction under general anesthesia, we recommend limiting physical activity for 2-4 weeks. You will wear the compression underwear that we will put on after the procedure for 2-6 weeks. Of course you can wash the special compression underwear, it is quick drying. You should also expect that for the first 2-3 days after the procedure, you will have a slightly orange-coloured fluid oozing from the small skin wounds. However, this is perfectly fine, it is the remnants of the tumescent solution that the operated area was soaked in. For these reasons, however, we recommend that you get a waterproof mattress and duvet cover to take home for the post-operative healing period.

Initially, shower only once a day.

You can only take a bath once the skin wounds have healed, about 1-2 weeks after the procedure, until then shower gently. Always gently dry the skin wounds after showering. If you feel that any of the treated areas are not healing well after liposuction and could become inflamed, apply antibiotics in the form of a patch or ointment (e.g. Framycoin). You will come in for a follow-up appointment 3 weeks after the procedure.

Watch your energy intake

You will not re-deposit fat in the areas where we performed liposuction. However, it likes to settle in other areas on your body if you do not follow a healthy lifestyle. So watch your energy intake and expenditure. You can slowly start exercising and playing sports about a month after the procedure. And make sure you stay out of the sun. Skin that has been damaged by the procedure is more prone to pigmentation. For several weeks after liposuction, we do not recommend sunbathing or going to the tanning bed.

You won't have to wait long for the results

Expect the area to be slightly swollen for a few days after the procedure, so you may find that the effect of liposuction is almost non-existent. However, after the first 2 weeks, the swelling will be absorbed, the loosened skin will begin to fix back to the deeper layers and you will finally see a visible result at first glance. The greatest effect of liposuction occurs about 2 months after the procedure.

Use a wooden roller and wear compression underwear

After liposuction, hardening and various irregularities may appear on the skin at the site of the liposuction. However, by using a wooden roller and consistently wearing compression underwear, these will completely disappear over time. Start rolling approximately 2 weeks after surgery. Ideally, roll the treated area for 20 minutes a day. If, despite these precautions, the hardening of your skin persists for more than 6 months, please discuss this with your surgeon. If the surgeon determines that the error was on his/her part, he/she will correct the procedure free of charge.

A change in sensitivity at the site where we performed the liposuction is also common. However, this condition will correct and return to normal within a few months. Other complications are very rare. However, in case of any problem, please contact your doctor.
