Snoring is caused by vibration of the soft tissues and structures in the upper airway during sleep, where the muscles and tissues in the throat area relax. This can lead to constriction or blockage of the passage of exhaled air, resulting in characteristic sounds. The most common factors in the development of snoring are:
- Narrower airways and soft tissues in the throat area.
- Overweight or obesity.
- The position of the body while sleeping.
- Use of alcohol or sedatives.
- Sleep apnea - stopping breathing during sleep.
Manifested by repeated breathing stoppages during sleep. This is a chronic condition that can have serious consequences on health and quality of life, including increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and other health complications. That's why it's important that sleep apnea syndrome be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.
The appropriateness of surgical intervention must be assessed by a sleep medicine or ENT specialist. Therefore, the first step is a detailed consultation with a physician followed by sleep monitoring. Based on the measured data, the cause of the sleep problems is then evaluated. Clients are offered the option of monitoring with an overnight stay at the clinic or renting a monitoring device to take home. Data is collected during the night using an app.
Sleep analysis determines whether the snoring can be safely surgically removed either by so-called septoplasty or upper floor resection. The procedures are performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia or general anaesthesia or analgosedation and can also be combined.
It is a surgical procedure where the surgeon corrects a deformity or inappropriate curvature of the nasal septum by making a small incision in the inner nasal cavity to the desired shape.
The nasal septum is a thin bony and cartilaginous septum that separates the nasal cavities. If the septum is curved or deformed, it can restrict the passage of air, causing breathing problems. The goal of the procedure is to improve the patency of the nasal passages and thus the overall comfort of the client.
Upper palate resection (uvulotomy) is one of the surgical procedures used to treat snoring, especially if it is caused by soft palate problems. The uvula is a part of the soft palate and is located at the back of the throat. It is here that vibrations are created during sleep that can typically cause snoring. During a resection, part or all of the uvula is removed, improving airflow during sleep.
The postoperative condition is usually accompanied by mild sore throat or nasal septum and swelling, which should gradually subside. Short-term restriction of physical activity should be expected for proper healing. Surgical removal of snoring is not possible in clients who are overweight or have any of the more severe forms of sleep apnea syndrome.
